Steve French

Hi!  My name is Steve French.  If you're looking for the excitement of fishing for BIG Chinook Salmon, Halibut over 100 pounds, Coho salmon, and countless species of rockfish including Ling Cod and Red Snapper, then you've come to the right place!
I'm the owner and operator of Optimist, a 26' Northwest welded aluminum fishing vessel, Transport Canada and Coast Guard approved. Based in Port Renfrew in summer and Sooke in winter, the Optimist is loaded with state of the art electronics and safety equipment to take our guests to the prime Vancouver Island BC fishing grounds - quickly, safely, and in absolute comfort.

Steve, ready to take you fishing!I've lived on the west coast of Vancouver Island all my life and have spent my entire life devoted to learning the art of sport fishing. With more than 20 years experience guiding sport fishing in Port Renfrew and Sooke, and 22 years as a trained commercial diver, I have extensive knowledge of the ocean around Vancouver Island, both above and below.
There's no more exciting and rewarding place for salmon fishing and halibut fishing than the west coast of Vancouver Island, from Victoria, through Sooke, and up to Port Renfrew and the famous Swiftsure Bank.
So welcome aboard - and let's go fishing!

We just got back from a great fishing trip off the west coast of Vancouver Island.
Boarded "Optimist" at 10 a.m., a spanking new 26' aluminum Fishing Machine, and simply the best boat in the area, and fast!!  We couldn't even get all our lines into the water when we were hammered by salmon, and after a few blistering runs and primal screams we subdued a bad boy 24 pounder.  This pattern repeated for the rest of the day.
Second day out we came across 2 huge Humpback whales having an all-you-can-eat buffet.  Incredible!!
We headed for the Kill Zone that we fished the day before, and nailed 2 more King salmon.  Could've got more but had a ferry to catch.
Special thanks to Steve French!  His excellent operation is highly recommended.
He worked the water hard for us, and the Optimist is my dream fishing machine.
